2021 Kitchen Trends

I attended the KBIS virtual show last February and finished the week feeling so inspired by the 2021 kitchen trends. I’m sure it is no surprise that smart technology was a hot topic, but some of the other trends might be a little less obvious.

Matte Black Plumbing Fixtures

Unlacquered brass had its moment, but now it’s matte black’s turn to be the popular metal finish. I love it for a kitchen faucet. I would pair it with polished nickel or brass cabinet hardware and lighting. Kohler offers products in matte black for kitchens and bathrooms.

More Color

I am so happy to see color returning to kitchen design. Colored cabinets, tile, wallpaper, and textiles are bringing life back to kitchens this year. We have all been spending more time at home and want our kitchens to be cheerful and comforting.

More Comfort in the Kitchen

This is a trend I fully intend to embrace. My family has been sitting at our dining table and kitchen island more than ever and if I’m being completely honest, the chairs and stools are not that comfortable. They are totally fine for a quick meal, but I want “long chats after dinner” comfort.

Wood Cabinetry

Wood kitchen cabinets add so much warmth and texture to a kitchen. Craftsmanship, quality, and sustainability are a high priority for kitchens this year. Solid wood cabinets have a timeless feel and can last for decades when built properly.

Practical Magic Dollhouse

It is crazy to see what things people want to watch on Instagram. Last Christmas, I became slightly obsessed with watching parents building dollhouses for their children. They would work on these secret projects late at night fueled by coffee and a love for miniature home furnishings. They painstakingly attached every individual roof shingle and laid hardwood flooring in a complicated herringbone pattern. I couldn’t wait for the project updates and became weirdly invested in these miniature homes. I don’t currently have any reason to build a dollhouse, but that hasn’t stopped me from dreaming of one. My dream dollhouse would be similar to the house in the movie Practical Magic. I remember watching that movie when I was younger and thinking about how I would redecorate the house. I made a design board because I’m crazy and…well…it was fun. Here are some pieces that I would start with. I would add some fun wallpaper and paneling. I would probably put in a checkerboard floor too. Hmmm, Maybe next Christmas I should ask for a dollhouse.

Stylish ceiling fans

Ceiling fans have a bad reputation in the design world. Many of them are not the prettiest to look at, but sometimes they are necessary in order to make a home more comfortable. A good designer is not just choosing options based on looks. They want to make your home comfortable and practical while looking good. Here are six stylish ceiling fans that I would be happy to use in my home. They range in price from $70-$600.

The Intern movie house: get the look

It is 33 degrees out today which is kind of making me want to crawl back into bed. That would not be very productive and my to do list is LONG, so I am going to throw on a warm sweater and get to work. I have another “get the look” design board for you today! Have you seen the movie The Intern? Anne Hathaway’s character lives in a beautiful brownstone filled with eye candy. I’m focusing on the dining/living room, but the kitchen and primary bedroom are amazing too.

The yellow sofa is my favorite element in the room. I love the mix of styles and family friendly vibe of this space. Here is how you can recreate the look in your home.
