Eclectic Grandpa Design Style

Move over grandmillennial style. It’s time to make room for eclectic grandpa. To achieve an eclectic grandpa design style, incorporate a mix of vintage furniture pieces, such as ornate wooden chests or velvet armchairs. Layer in cozy elements like crocheted throws or patchwork quilts for a nostalgic touch. Display collections of unique items like old bottles, clocks, or antique books to add character. Embrace mismatched patterns and colors for curtains, rugs, and upholstery to create a lived-in and eclectic feel. Integrate traditional elements like botanical prints or Persian-style rugs to enhance the grandpa aesthetic. Remember, the key is to blend old-world charm with unexpected details to achieve an eclectic grandpa home design style. I’ve created two design boards to inspire you. I know that everyone’s budgets are a little different, so the second board is a look for less.

The Intern movie house: get the look

It is 33 degrees out today which is kind of making me want to crawl back into bed. That would not be very productive and my to do list is LONG, so I am going to throw on a warm sweater and get to work. I have another “get the look” design board for you today! Have you seen the movie The Intern? Anne Hathaway’s character lives in a beautiful brownstone filled with eye candy. I’m focusing on the dining/living room, but the kitchen and primary bedroom are amazing too.

The yellow sofa is my favorite element in the room. I love the mix of styles and family friendly vibe of this space. Here is how you can recreate the look in your home.

Living room inspired by the Marvelous mrs. maisel

Please tell me that you have watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. I have watched it from the very beginning and highly recommend binge-watching it if you haven’t already. I always pay close attention to set design and was blown away by the apartments in this show.

I love the living room shown above. The mix of traditional and mid-century makes it really interesting. I also like the feminine colors, floral patterns, and curved shapes. Here is a living room design inspired by the room above.

English Cottage Style

If you follow design trends at all, you probably already know that the English Cottage style is having a moment. It is such a change from the white and gray minimal pattern interiors we’ve been seeing for so long and I’m kind of excited about it.

There are a few key elements to achieve the English Cottage style.

  • Floral patterns on the upholstery, pillows, curtains or lampshades

  • Lots and lots of books scattered on shelves, side tables or even stacked on the floor

  • Fabric lampshades pleated to perfection

  • Lots of texture and pattern

  • A collected feel

The photo above is of the English cottage from the movie The Holiday. Remember when Cameron Diaz let a complete stranger sleep on the sofa but we all understood because we would let Jude Law crash on our sofa too? Kind of makes you want your very own English cottage, doesn’t it? Here’s my inspiration for a cottage style living room complete with links for you. The striped sofa is my favorite even if it doesn’t come with Jude Law.

Accent Chair and Sofa Combinations

Sofas are a big commitment. I have been searching for the perfect sofa for a LONG time. I want a beautiful sofa that’s not too hard and not too soft. It needs to be a good height and comfortable for watching a movie or taking a nap. I also want it to have good back support for a conversation with guests. It also needs to be low maintenance and continue to look good even if I let my active little rugrats sit/jump/play on it. Commitment is obviously a struggle for me. It’s taken me so long to decide that now I actually need to replace a second sofa. Wish me luck.

Many people struggle with finding the right chairs to pair with their sofa. They may feel like playing it “safe” and buy a matching set. Although a matching set is perfectly fine, choosing your own combination is easier than you think. Below are a few combinations to get you inspired. I also included some tips so you can find your own perfect combination.

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6

Number 1 is a modern take on a leather chesterfield. I paired it with a fun pattern and a more organic shaped chair. The colors work well together. Number 3 has the pattern this time so I paired it with a solid chair with the same tufting as the sofa. Number 5 looks soft and comfy so I paired it with a more structured chair. Both have a casual, laid back vibe.

7 / 8 / 9 / 10 / 11 / 12

7 / 8 / 9 / 10 / 11 / 12

Number 7 is a gorgeous moss color so I paired it with a neutral chair that has a textured fabric and leather accents to add visual interest. Number 9 has clean lines that pair nicely with the rounded leather chair. The gold accents are repeated in both. Number 11 is a more traditional/formal sofa. I paired it with a neutral chair in the same wood tone. The barrel-shaped arms make the chair a modern version of a traditional Jenny Lind chair.

Tips:

  1. Scale is important. Don’t pair an overstuffed chair and a half with a small, delicate-framed sofa.

  2. Although there are exceptions, pairing a patterned sofa with patterned chairs typically doesn’t work.

  3. Keep in mind that some guests may have different seating preferences than you. If you choose a deep, down-filled sofa, you should pair it with chairs that are a little harder and more structured.
