2021 Kitchen Trends

I attended the KBIS virtual show last February and finished the week feeling so inspired by the 2021 kitchen trends. I’m sure it is no surprise that smart technology was a hot topic, but some of the other trends might be a little less obvious.

Matte Black Plumbing Fixtures

Unlacquered brass had its moment, but now it’s matte black’s turn to be the popular metal finish. I love it for a kitchen faucet. I would pair it with polished nickel or brass cabinet hardware and lighting. Kohler offers products in matte black for kitchens and bathrooms.

More Color

I am so happy to see color returning to kitchen design. Colored cabinets, tile, wallpaper, and textiles are bringing life back to kitchens this year. We have all been spending more time at home and want our kitchens to be cheerful and comforting.

More Comfort in the Kitchen

This is a trend I fully intend to embrace. My family has been sitting at our dining table and kitchen island more than ever and if I’m being completely honest, the chairs and stools are not that comfortable. They are totally fine for a quick meal, but I want “long chats after dinner” comfort.

Wood Cabinetry

Wood kitchen cabinets add so much warmth and texture to a kitchen. Craftsmanship, quality, and sustainability are a high priority for kitchens this year. Solid wood cabinets have a timeless feel and can last for decades when built properly.

Farmhouse Kitchen Accessories

This is a super short post today mainly because it is our last week of school and things are crazy. We also have swim lessons, doctor appointments, fieldwork, and a three year old who won’t put weight on his little foot. I’m hoping for the best on that last one.

This summer will be two years since we started building our kitchen. We finished it enough to use it and then switched our focus to other house projects. We’ve been slowly trying to finish all the small details and I CAN‘T WAIT to finally see it completed. I am choosing accessories that will bring some charm into this farmhouse kitchen and below are a few of the top contenders.

Inspiration from the It's Complicated Kitchen

I rarely go to the movie theater. I am blessed with a mother who takes my boys to all the new kid movies. That poor woman has sat through every animated film you can imagine. The boys love it and I get a few precious hours to regroup. Brady prefers to watch movies at home and I really don’t mind that. Nancy Meyers films are the exception for me. I want to see those movies right away and on a big screen so I can fully submerse myself in the beautiful set design, timeless fashion, complicated women, and big romance. I want to sit there in the quiet theater with a bag of popcorn and a cherry coke and ignore real life for a while.

Remember the Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin movie It’s Complicated? I love that one. I adore Meryl and I loved her character. The kitchen was pretty great too. We can’t all live like the characters in a Nancy Meyers film, but we can recreate some of the spaces in their homes. Here’s a start.
